Chapter 1-16, Volume 1 of The Villainess Turns the Hourglass

I wanted to go into this one without reading the synopsis and I’m glad I did. The first volume was full of surprises and I’m here for it.

Characters

We are introduced to an entire cast of characters in the first volume. We get to understand motives for these character early on and this makes you feel invested in the story. There is space to go deep into character backgrounds as a few of the characters have mysterious qualities. It’s almost like a ‘who-dunit’ and I like the mysterious element they all bring.

Setting and Atmosphere

This is in a beautiful royal setting. I don’t believe the city was mentioned, although it could have been and I missed it. I like how this isn’t truly an isekai, but a time travel manhwa so our main heroine (or villainess in this case) has a deep understanding of the world she is in.

Plot and Story

Aria is beheaded and by some unknown power is able to go back in time and get a do-over. Before she travels back in time she learns that her execution was orchestrated and is on a quest to solve the mystery of her own beheading. I love how she needs to keep her social graces and etiquette at the forefront as she cannot seem suspicious as she tries to gain the trust and loyalty of those around her.

Writing Style

This is very well written and I feel emotions with the characters. I think the writing style is what gives this manhwa such a strong rating overall. We get to experience the events of the book with the characters. I found myself exhaling and exclaiming in shock as I read through the book. At one point I even yelled out “Why would you trust him?!” when to me, our villainess wasn’t being the most intelligent.

Overall Enjoyment

Overall I enjoyed this manhwa a lot. The moment I finished reading I added volume 2 to my cart on amazon. It’s something that you won’t be able to put down. I read it all in one sitting without taking a break. I absolutely enjoyed reading through this even more so than the first volume of Villains are Destined to Die.
