I’m embarking on a journey to read One Piece. Yes, all of it. And to make it more dramatic I’m making the goal of finishing it by the end of the year. It’s going to painful for both me and my wallet, but it must be done.
Why I’m Reading the Manga
Everyone argues that One Piece is one of the best manga/anime of all time and I’ve never had interest in it. To be honest I still don’t have must interest in it right now either. So why would I read it? Because it’s ending.
With the end in clear view I know exactly what I need to do to consume the story. I can either watch the anime, or read the manga. Being the nerd that I am, I did the math.
It takes me about 1-1.5 hours to read through one volume of manga. With there being 106 volumes currently released. It would take me about 106-159 hours to read through all the manga.
Each episode of the anime is about 24 minutes, but I won’t watch the intro and outro 1000 times so lets say 20 minutes. There are 1112 episodes out at the time of writing this. It would take me 22 240 minutes or 371 hours to get caught up on the anime, which would still be behind the manga.
Clearly for just time it would be faster to consume the story by reading the manga. I prefer reading to watching shows anyways, as reading hold my interest for longer and I’m not staring at a screen for extended periods of time. I can even walk on my treadmill and read, so I won’t just be sitting on my butt.
For those reason reading the manga won the battle.
Rules of the Challenge
The rules of the challenge are simple.
- I must read all the words on every page. No skipping rants, annoying text or characters.
- I have to write reviews on each volume and arc.
- I have to have read the most recent released volume on Dec 31, 2024 (Volume 107)
