By the Grace of the Gods was a new book series that I wanted to start as a part of my August reading goals. I bought it from the cover art which is beautiful and I’m glad that I enjoyed the novel as well. It’s a wonderful cozy read to add to your collection. It was a fast read for myself as well. I think I finished this book in about 3 hours.
Plot and Story
By the Grace of the Gods follows our main character Ryoma who has been reincarnated into another world. Instantly upon reincarnation he meets 3 gods of that world who give him a backstory and reincarnate him as a 10 year old boy.
Without getting into much spoilers, he makes a new life for himself by doing things he enjoys compared to overworking as he did in his previous life.
Characters
The characters in the book are all loveable. I’m going to compare it to Ascendance of a Bookworm because it doesn’t have any anti-heroes, challenges or even difficult characters. I think this creates a wholesome story, but I’m looking forward to some conflict within the series.
Although loveable, no character really stands out and they all seem to fit an archetype so I didn’t remember anyone’s names. We have a fox girl, rich guy, rich guys daughter the same age as Ryoma, guildmaster and slimes. LOL
Setting and Atmosphere
Its the definition of a cozy read and so its a quick, fun and easy read. I found myself halfway through the novel in no time. There isn’t really much around the world and I’m hoping we get to it in later volumes.
Writing Style
The structure for the story is very simple and easy to read. After starting this I realized it would be a good bedtime story to read for my little ones before bed. The perfect story to just escape from the problems of the real world with no real problems of their own.
There is no major conflict or problematic characters in this volume. While this made it a wonderfully relaxing story to enjoy on a Sunday with a cup of tea, I can’t see the story continuing to pull my interest. We will need some conflict to keep things interesting.
Overall Enjoyment
Overall it was above average, but not good enough to recommend with high praises. It does have the potential to be a good series. I would have to read more volumes before I can recommend the series, though.
If you’re new to light novels you will enjoy this series. If you’ve read quite a few, it’s still enjoyable, but more of a cozy read.
Once more reviews are released for this series, a link to the other reviews will be posted here. Until then, please take a look as some other light novel reviews!
