I watched the anime Blue Lock when it was released and since then I’ve been wanting more. I prefer to enjoy sports in anime form versus manga, but I got tired of waiting and decided to just read through the manga to cure my impatience.
Characters
I’m going to skip giving the review for character on volume one. The first book in the series is usually used to build the world and story so most will get one star. Volume one does end with the setup for the main characters and so look forward to that in the volume two review.
Setting and Atmosphere
I absolutely love the atmosphere if this book. The moment the young men enter Blue Lock you can feel the high stakes and emotion through the pages. It’s not an easy task to accomplish, especially as early in the series as the first volume. This is not something that I can read before bed because it makes my heart race!
Plot and Story
Blue Lock is the place where they have gathered the top 300 football strikers under the age of 20 to develop their skills with the ultimate goal of finding the number one striker in Japan. I’ve watched the first season of the anime so I don’t want to give any details, but you’re going to love it.
Writing Style
It’s a sports manga and so it fits the theme that a lot of the imagery is delivered in hte style of a sports commentary. I like this touch on sports manga as it really brings the pages and stories alive. The pacing is nice and I didn’t find myself flipping through to see how many pages I had left in a chapter. I flew threw them at top speed and was disappointed when the book ended. (Good thing I already bought volume 2)
Overall Enjoyment
Overall it’s a great read I really enjoyed reading it. Nothing stood out that needed improvement to get the full 5 star rating. I have a hard time rating the first book in a series a full 5 star rating as you simply can’t achieve everything in the first volume. I do which they spent a little more time on even the main character so you’d feel more invested in his journey.
