If you search top favourite light novels, Ascendance of a Bookworm will pop up on pretty much everyones list. I have to be honest with you. If I see a book, movie, game, or anything for that matter that makes it on most peoples’ top list, I immedaitely think that the media will be medicore at best. I’ve learned my lesson over the years about following the hype train, (I’m looking at you booktok) and so I try to make my book selections based off of what I am currently enjoying.

I must say I’m pleasantly surprised by this novel.

Ascendance of a Bookworm follows a college student with an insatiable love of books who gets isekai’d into another world where she inhabits the body of a five-year-old girl named Myne. It’s not your typical isekai and often times while reading I forget that part of her origin. I can’t place my finger on why this book was so addictive, but I couldn’t put it down. Following Myne on her ultimate quest to aquire books left me giggling under my blanket her frustrations and challenges all too relatable.

Although this is the first book of the series, the character development so far is moving at a very good pace. Noone feels like a ‘side character’ and each person we come across in this familiar, yet strange world all come with own sets of strengths, challenges and goals. Myne’s father is a humble poor soldier, her mother doing her best with what she has, her sister dealing with new responsibilities as she’s coming of age, as well as their neighbors, friends and co-workers.

I cannot wait to continue to dive into the next volume.
